What
is GIS?
GIS or Geographic Information Systems are used to overlay
layers of information about a place in order to display
and analyze spatially referenced data. GIS can be used
by marketers to locate potential customers, fire fighters
to predict the spread of forest fires, emergency dispatchers
to find the fastest route, and city planners to analyze
the spread of urban development. The list of GIS implementation
is endless.

| Web
Based GIS |
 |
Developing an internet based GIS
application is the best way to distribute your GIS
information to a wide range of users. This type of
application does not require the user to have any
GIS software loaded on their PC. They simply connect
to an internet site and can view, query, and update
GIS data through their internet browser. Developers
IT has experience and proficiency in designing internet
based GIS applications using the following software:
|
|
|
ArcIMS is a software package
made by ESRI that enables spatially referenced
information to be delivered over an intranet
or internet. ArcIMS services are installed and
configured on a web server. The task of these
services is to receive requests from an internet
browser and to produce a map image based on
these requests.
|
|
|
MapServer is a free software
package that is used to distribute GIS applications
over the internet. MapServer is not intended
to be a fully functional GIS system, but can
be used to query and browse spatially referenced
data in many different formats. This technology
was originally developed by the University of
Minnesota. Click
